You’ve probably seen many ads for asbestos lawyers on TV. By now, most people have learned the basics of Asbestos. They know that the material was used for years in construction, insulation, and other product packaging. Many people are aware that asbestos is a known carcinogen and that exposure can have fatal consequences. What many people do not know is why these cases continue to make the news.
That’s why we wanted to share this video with you.
We all encounter asbestos naturally. As the video above explains, in the United States you are most likely to encounter asbestos when you are removing something that contains it. However, because of the widespread use of this material, many people continue to suffer from exposure each year. The fibers can be considered at the most dangerous when they are inhaled. Maybe that’s why asbestos has come to be known as the ‘evil dust.’
At the beginning of the 20th century, some public health inspectors suspected that asbestos could be linked to cases of lung cancer. In 1918, the insurance industry began to reevaluate the ‘dusty trades,’ and the video above suggests that some companies even refused to offer life insurance policies to asbestos workers. Still, demand for asbestos and asbestos products continued to grow.
At the time, asbestos was prized for its wide variety of industrial and commercial applications. The public came to rely on asbestos based household products like tablecloths and construction materials like insulation. Flexible sheets made out of the material were used in walls; shingles made out of the material were used as part of roofs. Even toy trains and the pipes that held our drinking water were made out of the material. The public really couldn’t get enough of asbestos.
We have come a long way since the days of the educational propaganda video like the one above. Nowadays complicated training materials prepare professionals to identify and remove asbestos when they encounter it with care. As the Vice video we shared with you at the beginning of the article demonstrates, there is still a great deal of work to be done.
